Two back to back colder Spring Saturday’s in May to begin the concert season. It had been raining all day so everything was soaked. Just before the show began the rain stopped. I made excellent time to the show. From my parents house to the venue is about 27 miles. So with no traffic 35 mins is about the fastest way taking 64 w. The ride there almost always takes longer then the way back because of traffic. So for it being less then a 45 mins drive straight from the driveway into the lots with 0 time wasting waiting in line (which usually happens) I cant complain. I arrived at 19:30 into lot f. As I was arriving there was no cars in front or behind me, so people must have gotten there a lot earlier then I did. Lot D was not used.(home before 12pm)
It was the second night of the tour. They played Raliegh the day before. I always try to use setlist.fm mostly to see at around what times each act comes on and ends at. I promise I don’t just go to peak the setlist. I have the “Lawnie Pass” for Jiffy Lube Live so I just try to go to all the show anyway man. I really don’t even know more than a couple of the songs for almost all the artists that I see at this venue. It said show started at 7pm. I knew the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band was opening. But alleged there was another guy as the first act going on at 18:50 then it said NGDB 19:30. Hank Williams Jr. 21:00 (9pm)
So I when I was walking up to the gates NGDB had already been playing. I took my watch off the last couple of shows, but if I can remember they played till about 20:30. So well say for about an hour. Hank came on before 9 and played for about 90 mins. Show ended at sometime around 10:15pm. The venue has a cut off at 23:00 so it was earlier then I woulda liked. But again just like Neil Young the week before. A older guy in his 70’s I cant give them to much of a hard time. If the headliner gives you an hour & a half you gotta show some respect.
NGDB was good. Hank & his band were fantastic. My favorite part of the show was when Hank played the grand piano. During this he mentioned former musicians & friends who aren’t with us anymore. Like the Late Legend Jerry Lee Lewis. I yelled JERRY! Obviously there was a lot of respect for his father Hank Williams (Sr). There were some slight side seats I coulda probably sunk into under the pavilion. But I just went up towards the back of the side of the lawn that overlooks Gainesville High School main field. Excellent view and next to the steep ramp!
There crowd was pretty white as you imagine. Mixed ages & probably 60% male. Lots of confederate flags. Which I don’t like but I respect all flags. I was being low key & chill the whole show. For the most part I didn’t like the other patrons there. Two different times people came up to me & THEY were the ones being sketch. I was in the back the whole time. Heard “faggot” a couple times (Coulda been about me idk). While I was talking to this nice lady about the bands on the back of my jacket. This fat probably 20 something year old kid came up to me outa no where and tried talking to us. Next thing I know I hear“…Niggers...” End of the show he was still being sketch around me. I ended up finding a staff member to take me to the gate. I had my nails painted red. When he asked why. I said “ooo do you like blue? Are you a Democrat?”
